The quiet strength of the black bear and the fragile grace of the Canadian tiger swallowtail come together in this timeless work by Gisèle Benoit. The wild irises, the only prominent element of the decor, add a touch of poetry to this encounter between the main subjects. Did you know this bear really exists? Gisèle had long dreamed of painting this black bear, which she observed for several consecutive years in Northern Ontario. Named Philosopher Bear by the Benoit family, this noble epicurean loved to contemplate his kingdom and was happy near the marshes where the days passed gently, in a warm light, one wingbeat at a time. We can watch the scene that inspired Gisèle to create this magnificent work, in episode 17 of the web-series MA’IINGAN, IN THE LAND OF THE WOLF.

The original painting belongs to the artist’s collection. Painted in 2023, it’s a major piece of the IN THE LAND OF THE WOLF Exhibition, at the Monique and Gisèle Benoit Centre. This is a 30’’ x 40’’ (76 cm x 102 cm) oil on canvas.

Fine art prints to spread the beauties of art and nature

Each year, Monique and Gisèle allow the reproduction of a limited number of original paintings. They do this essentially to make the products derived from their art accessible to all budgets, and above all, to finance the educational projects of the Society of Art and Science for Nature (SAS Nature), the non-profit organization of which they are co-founders.
