It is called “scarlet tanager”. Gisèle was about 10 years old when she first observed it. The bird was singing in a flowering apple tree, in the backyard of her parents’ residence in Berthierville, where she grew up. Her encounter with this dazzling prince of beauty is one of her most beautiful and early ornithological memories. She waited all these years before painting it, perhaps to be up to the challenge. Of course, she has often seen scarlet tanagers since this first sighting, but her wonder as a little girl is present in this painting.
