Monique Blaquière was born on November 17, 1940, in Montréal. Youngest in a family of eleven children, Monique grew up in the countryside, enjoying the romantic atmosphere created by her musician brothers, sisters and parents. As a child, she spent countless hours observing and drawing animals, so much so, that on her twelfth birthday her parents offered her a gift that would change her life: brushes, a small easel and oil paint.


A self-taught artist, Monique developed an extraordinary skill for observation, which gives her paintings a particular aura much sought after by art collectors. During the 1980s, the writer and art critic Guy Robert summarised her artistic progress in these words:


“This admirable enterprise stems from her dedication to her passion for nature. It begins with Monique’s childhood works of art, and takes flight in 1970, in her oil paintings devoted to the illustration and defence of wild animals. Then excursions, meetings, expositions and honours follow in rapid succession. Fauna and flora blend magically under her patient and skilful hand, in scenes of mist and snow, forest and springtime. Outside of the current style of today’s wildlife art, which she has largely surpassed, her art continues, always faithful to her vision. And behind these harmonious scenes, one believes that one hears a prelude of Chopin’s…”
